Olivia Yip

Olivia Yip is an assistant professor at SJSU in the Civil & Engineering department. She has recently completed her doctorate at UC Berkeley where she used big data analysis tools to describe tidal and seasonal stratification in Lower South San Francisco Bay. In her final year of graduate school, she was an intern for a small, women-owned, San Francisco environmental consulting firm where she worked with city engineers to look into solutions for infrastructure design for a changing climate.

She firmly believes that adapting our communities requires balancing nature-based solutions, protecting our built environments, and honest discussions of managed retreat.

Sandra L. Rivera

Sandra L. Rivera is chief executive officer of Altera, an Intel Company, a leader in field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) that are used across the data center, communications, industrial, automotive, aerospace and defense markets.

Before assuming her current role, Rivera led Intel’s Data Center and AI Group, where she guided development of data center products, including Intel® Xeon® processors, Intel® Max® and Flex® series graphic processors, Intel® Gaudi® AI accelerators and FPGA products. Rivera also drove Intel’s overall artificial intelligence (AI) strategy and product roadmap. In 2023, Rivera was named by TIME Magazine as one of the industry’s most influential people in AI.

From 2019 to 2021, Rivera was Intel’s chief people officer, leading the company’s Human Resources organization worldwide. She also led Intel’s Network Platforms Group from 2017 to 2019, driving the transformation of network infrastructure to Intel-based solutions.

Rivera joined Intel in 2000 as a marketing director after the acquisition of Dialogic Corp. Earlier, Rivera co-founded and served as president of The CTI Authority and served as president of the computer telephony division at Catalyst Telecom.

Rivera holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Pennsylvania State University. She sits on the Equinix board of directors and is a member of the University of California, Berkeley’s engineering advisory board.

There, she focused on risk management control of surgical robots during the design phase of the robot. Beyond her professional experience, Zahra is committed to youth development. Nathalie Baracaldo, Ph.D.

Nathalie Baracaldo leads the AI Security and Privacy Solutions team and is a Research Staff Member at IBM’s Almaden Research Center in San Jose, CA. Nathalie is passionate about delivering machine learning solutions that are highly accurate, withstand adversarial attacks and protect data privacy. She focuses on multiple areas including federated learning, where models are trained without directly accessing training data, and adversarial machine learning, where defenses are designed to withstand potential attacks to the machine learning pipeline and most recently unlearning. Nathalie is the Principal Investigator for the DARPA program “Guaranteeing AI Robustness Against Deception” (GARD). In 2022, Nathalie co-edited the book “Federated Learning: A Comprehensive Overview of Methods and Applications”. Becca Bugielski

Her career started in Wisconsin where she was named the City Engineer for a community where she managed the City’s $13 million per year capital improvement plan. Becca has spent the last several years in California further developing her water and wastewater engineering knowledge as well as expanding her leadership role at MKN & Associates. Becca previously served as MKN’s Southern California Operations Manager where she managed the Ventura, Santa Clarita, Oceanside, and Irvine offices. Katie is a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer specializing in structural analysis of spacecraft components and systems at Lockheed Martin Space, where she has worked since 2015. She is currently the stress lead for a large spacecraft program, where she oversees an internal analysis team, approves analysis of numerous subcontracts, develops and verifies specification requirements, regularly interfaces with senior customers – and occasionally performs structural analysis! Prior to joining LM, Katie worked at Pratt & Whitney as a lead structural analyst for the nozzle and exhaust system of the F35 jet engine, and at ATA Engineering, performing aerospace analysis and providing software training for FEA analysis tools. Zahra Ghaed is a staff software engineer at Tesla Autopilot. Zahra currently leads autopilot vision data pipelines being used to train neural networks using massive fleet data. At Tesla Autopilot team, Zahra generates training datasets for next-generation autonomy on a single end-to-end video network that directly drives the car. Before joining tesla vision team, Zahra spent a few years at AI Tooling team where she worked as a back-end engineer on building Tesla’s in-house 3D labeling tool. During her time at AI Tooling, Zahra helped build an auto labeling pipeline that uses millions of clips across the world to 3D reconstruct regions.

Zahra received her Master’s degree in Computer Science from Virginia Tech in 2017 focused on design and implementation of an educational application aimed at promoting coding skills. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in 2014 from University of Tehran in Computer Science.

Carolyn Gonot

Providing solid public transportation leadership for more than a quarter century, Carolyn Gonot is one of a handful of women leading major public transit agencies throughout the U.S. She built her career over three decades, mostly at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), in multiple leadership roles including Chief Engineering and Program Delivery Officer, Chief BART Program Officer, Chief Development Officer, and Deputy Director of the Congestion Management Program.

Her extensive experience in successfully delivering capital projects to improve mobility in Silicon Valley led her to become the first woman to take the helm of the Utah Transit Authority, where she served from 2019-2021. 

Ms. Gonot then returned to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority as VTA’s General Manager/CEO in June 2021 and rising to the challenge of leading the agency through the aftermath of a deadly mass shooting and navigating the recovery of transit service devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic.  

In her role as General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of VTA, she is responsible for 2100 employees, delivering projects, programs, and transit services that provide mobility solutions for more than 2 million people who live and work in Silicon Valley.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Ms. Gonot received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Notre Dame, and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Penn State University.  She is an active supporter of the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS), honored as the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter’s Woman of the Year in 2013. In 2023, the Silicon Valley Business Journal named Ms. Gonot to the region’s Power 100 most influential business people.

Danielle Green

Prior to her role as Assistant Director, she held the title of Principal Engineer where she focused on the planning, design, and construction of the City’s utility infrastructure capital projects. Xuejun Gu

Karla G. Gutierrez Cuevas

Karla Gutierrez joined KLA-Tencor in August 2019 after the Orbotech acquisition as a research scientist. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from the Liquid Crystal Institute at Kent State University, Ohio. As part of the FPD division in KLA, in the manager role, she focuses on the sensor group providing statistical analysis and solutions to the manufacturing team to improve the yield as well as interacting with other researchers at KLA for R&D. She has 10+ years of experience in liquid crystal and nanoparticle synthesis and characterization focusing on their interactions and potential applications. Before her Ph. D., she worked in the chemical industry as a quality control Engineer and process development at Symrise S.A. (Mexico). Her expertise was expanded to polymers after joining the master’s program in 2007 from the CIQA, CONACyT, Mexico, focusing on the synthesis of polymers, liquid crystal monomers and azo-derivatives and their properties upon UV-visible exposure. She strives to create awareness and champions the cause through talks, panel discussions, and courses at forums such as SWE’s Advance Learning Center, Embedded Vision Summit, IEEE Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Silicon Valley Women in Engineering, and more. She has also helped shape the IEEE AIS Ethics Standards as an expert reviewer. Audrey Lin

Audrey Lin is a Staff Scientist in the Product Transfer team at Cepheid.  She develops and manufactures molecular diagnostic products supporting healthcare clinical testing for infectious diseases, sexual health, oncology and genetics.

Prior to Cepheid, Audrey Lin worked at Affymetrix as a Scientist in R&D, where she developed high-throughput, multiplexed gene expression quantitation assays using in situ hybridization system.  Audrey also had a career in the fashion industry, where she was a designer at the fashion house of J. Mendel and then at the fashion label, Elie Tahari.

Audrey holds a BS in Biology from Fu-Jen University in Taipei and a PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering from UCLA, where she also completed her post-doctoral research in gene therapy.  She also obtained an AAS degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Diana wanted to stay close to home and decided to go to San Jose State University where she pursued a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering.  While at school, she was heavily involved with the local student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Chi Epilson Honor Society, where she eventually also took up officer positions in the later of her undergrad career for both organizations.  She also led the GeoWall team at the annual regional conferences for ASCE for two years. During the summer before her senior year, she was also involved with the Earthquake Engineers Research Institute (EERI), where she participated in a summer research project in San Diego. After graduation, she stayed involved with the San Jose Branch of ASCE and served as a board member for 6 years in which she helped plan events and network with various companies and agencies. She is very passionate about mentoring her fellow staff and any upcoming engineers.

Catherine Wah (she/her) is a Staff Software Engineer and Technical Lead Manager at Google, where she leads a team bringing genAI features to Google Workspace products. During her 9-year career at Google working on applied ML, she has launched features for multiple consumer products, including Photos, Assistant, and Google Shopping. Dedicated to using her skills and experience to empower and uplift others in her community, Catherine has previously participated in a Google.org Fellowship, leaving her day job at Google to work full-time for 6 months alongside engineers at a nonprofit to build scalable technical solutions. She also serves on the board of directors for the Women in Machine Learning organization. Catherine received her PhD in Computer Science from UCSD and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from UIUC. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, and spending time outdoors hiking, surfing, and rock climbing.

She joined Applied Materials in 2009 as a Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) Process Engineer for metal applications. She developed Cu CMP baselines for advanced technologies that are currently utilizing in logic, memory and packaging fields. In 2018, she switched her role as a Global Product Marketing (GPM) for CMP uniformity products, packaging applications and Asian markets to lead product roadmaps and business strategy to ensure Applied Materials leadership in the CMP industry. Following her passion in supporting talent’s growth, she is now a Technical Program Manager in Applied Material Business Development Group to develop enterprise solutions for talent and productivity enrichment.

Prior to joining Stryker, Wendy worked at Johnson & Johnson in both the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors, specializing in drug-device combination products for a variety of disease states, from pain management to coronary artery disease. She has worked in a variety of functional roles, including those in R&D and project management. Wendy is passionate about mentoring the next generation of women engineers and is the past site lead of the Stryker Women’s Network chapter at the Fremont, CA site. She holds a M.S. in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Florida and a B.S. in Ceramic/Bio Engineering from the University of Illinois.

Before joining Stanford, she earned her Ph.D. in Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Karolinska Institutet, focusing on utilizing population-based health data and clinical information to explore the etiology and early detection of gastrointestinal cancers. Now her research interest is to study epigenetic alterations through advanced methylation sequencing techniques, contributing to cancer diagnosis and monitoring. With a cross-disciplinary background, she brings expertise in biostatistics, epidemiology, and molecular pathology to precision medicine.

Prior to joining the City of San Jose, Jessica directed transportation and land use policy for the Silicon Valley Leadership Group and worked with Seifel Consulting Inc., where she advised on a wide range of urban planning projects. She received a Master of City and Regional Planning degree from the University of California, Berkeley, a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from Brown University.

Jessica is an avid dancer, performer and advocate for the arts and urbanism, having served on the San Jose Arts Commission and the Advisory Board for SPUR San Jose. She lives with her husband and two children in Downtown San Jose, enabling fun but complex multi-modal, multi-generational commutes.
